The Brooklyn Skyline Is About to Change Forever

Brooklyn’s first supertall, 9 DeKalb, is rising on a triangular corner lot in Downtown Brooklyn, attached to the historic Dime Savings Bank and next to the original Junior’s Cheesecake. The project includes an extensive renovation of the neoclassical bank, which will be converted into retail space, and connected to the 93-story residential tower through its amenity floors. Thirty percent of the units will be set aside for affordable housing, which is also unique for a supertall.

Construction Update: The Wharf

The Office of the Future

“In these ‘between spaces,’ we forge natural connections with daylight and vegetation,” Chris Sharples says. “The building begins to breathe.” Such healthful environments, with an abundance of fresh air, send a message about a company’s commitment to its staff’s wellbeing.

9 DeKalb Avenue Becomes Tallest Structure In Brooklyn

9 DeKalb Avenue has passed a milestone in its way to becoming the first supertall skyscraper in the outer boroughs. The 73-story residential tower recently surpassed the 720-foot roof height of Brooklyn Point, giving it the title of the tallest structure in Brooklyn. Designed by SHoP Architects and developed by JDS, 9 DeKalb Avenue will stand 1,066 feet tall and yield 425 rental apartments and 150 condominiums.

Justin Davidson Reviews 111 West 57th Street

SHoP’s 111 has been in the works for years, of course, and if you think it may be a sumptuous relic in a post-pandemic age of modesty, the tea leaves suggest otherwise. Soon, a skyscraper so scrawny you can practically see around it will be framed by the next generation of fat colossi coming to the neighborhood around Grand Central. One Vanderbilt is already there, patting the Chrysler Building on the head like a kid brother. SOM’s 175 Park is on the way. KPF’s 343 Madison isn’t far behind. And they will not be the last. No tower will be the last, biggest, or tallest for long, but this one might be the best.

Ace up the Sleeve

After two decades in the same space, a Washington, D.C., law office began contemplating a change. A new office building by the late Helmut Jahn rising on Pennsylvania Avenue presented an enticing alternative. The firm contracted New York’s SHoP Architects for early programming and test fits, and when 184,000 square feet across eight floors of Jahn’s building were ready, the firm was ready for them.

Collins Arch Wins Victorian Architecture Award

After a recent visit from the jury, Melbourne’s Collins Arch, a collaboration between SHoP Architects and Woods Bagot, was awarded the prestigious Sir Osborn McCutcheon Award for Commercial Architecture.
