SHoP gave this small apartment building at 127 Madison Avenue an outsized attitude.
A renovation and addition to an existing structure, this project plays on the notion of liberating its interior volumes from the structural grid of the building. Angled steel and glass window boxes were inserted into the large horizontal openings of the existing brick facade to create intimate seating nooks within the interior. Cantilevering out over the street, they also offer expansive views down the avenue towards Madison Square Park. Completed in 2008, the building has eight floor-through apartments and two duplexes with outdoor terraces.
