Rector Street Bridge #2

Footbridge, Ground Zero

The Rector Street Pedestrian Bridge was commissioned by FEMA immediately following the events of 9/11 to be the first renewed pedestrian link between the financial district and Battery Park City. Today, the bridge continues to serve the south community as a vital link to downtown, well beyond its expected 2 year life. The current proposal for a renovation of the temporary structure seeks to improve walking surfaces, reduce the bridge footprint by removing the south box truss, and provide a new, lightweight and translucent canopy. Developed in close collaboration with composite fabricators from the boat-building industry, the armature maximizes efficiencies in both structure and fabrication.
