Columbia University, School of the Arts Expansion

Academic Building

The School of the Arts at Columbia University is significantly expanding its presence on 125th Street, and after an extensive search by the University in the summer of 2000, SHoP was chosen to be the architect for the project. The School is comprised of several divisions: Film, Theatre, Visual Arts, Writing, Digital Media and Music. Currently the School of the Arts’ programs and facilities are spread throughout ten different buildings on and around the main campus, creating a less than unified presence. The goal of the project is to consolidate resources, provide a framework for their ever growing technological needs, add several degree programs including interactive digital design and cultural theory, and to establish links with the surrounding neighborhood.
